The Go stones are made from Suwabute clamshells, a unique species of clam in the whole world that can only be collected on Okuragahama Beach in Hyuga City of Miyazaki prefecture. It features an exceptionally refined striped pattern, high quality, and stain resistance.


However, Suwabute clamshells were depleted about 30 years ago. They can no longer be found alongshore in Hyuga, which is why they are also called "The Dreamlike Go Stones."

Zelkova from the Aya Forestry Bureau is the best material for its clear, fine woodgrain, and it was often used for imperial buildings. However, since the Aya Forestry Bureau stopped logging altogether about 20 years ago, it will be difficult to obtain these Go Bowls from now on.
